January Update

Happy New Year Grade One Families!

Here's to an exceptional 2024 together! Cheers!

I hope everyone had a relaxing and restful Christmas Break considering how busy and vibrant we have been last month. This has been an amazing start to the year and I'm looking forward to a great one with the class.

First, I would like to share with you how successful and meaningful the Culminating Activity of our Christmas Kindness Challenge was. On the last day of school just before the Christmas Break, we all sat in a circle to lay baby Jesus in the crib that the students have placed straws (strips of paper) in. We began by saying our Christmas Prayer then we sang the song, "Away in a Manger." It was a very special and joyful moment for us because we have felt the presence of Jesus in our hearts. It was truly an incredible experience that I am so proud to be doing with my Grade One students.

This was taken during our Culminating Activity

Moving on, this month, we will continue to look at Daily and Seasonal Changes in Science. We will learn to compare characteristics of the four seasons, describe how humans prepare for seasonal changes, and identify people who help us prepare for and deal with seasonal changes. The students will use the design process to construct a device or structure that helps a Manitoba animal adjust to seasonal changes.

In Social Studies, we will be looking at Cluster 2: My Environment. The lessons include identifying our province and our country, the official languages of Canada, identifying characteristics of communities and some community helpers. As part of our activity, the class will be having a "Community Helper Dress Up Day", where students will be able to dress up like the community helper they want to be when they grow up. This is a good opportunity for students to share and teach the class where the community helper works, what they do for work, and how they help the community.

In ELA, we will continue with our Christmas Reader's Theater as we have two more plays left to do. In Phonics, we will continue working on the long vowel sounds and the consonant-vowel-consonant words.

This would be all for now. Please stay tuned for more updates!

Yours in Christ,

Mrs. Talaroc
