February Updates
Hello Grade One Families,
Just like that, another month has passed and Valentine's Day is just around the corner. This is a great time to discuss friendship with our kids, and build some social-emotional skills. In relation to this, the class will read a book called, "The Giving Tree", by Shel Silverstein., and we will be learning about sharing, loving and kindness. Along with this is a craft that we will be doing to integrate it with Art and I can't wait to share their "craftivity" which we will put on our bulletin board, SOON!
Another ELA activity that we've been working on is the "Build a Snowman Phonics". In this activity, students are to complete different tasks focusing on CVC and silent E words, initial and ending blends, R-controlled vowels, long vowel patterns, and the digraphs and double consonants. After they complete a task, they earn the parts of a snowman like the hat, nose, scarf, etc. Not only that they're having fun with it, they are also very excited and determined to earn all the parts of the snowman. You should see the smile in their face when they successfully earn the snowman parts. It's magical!
In Social Studies, we looked at Treaty Day Celebrations. We were able to relate to the story by becoming familiar with the book, The Friendship, which reveals the fundamental aspects of the Treaty-making process and its relevance today. We learned the importance of relationships and connections to others by being able to talk about the treaty relationship of the First Nations peoples and the Newcomers. We wrapped up the lesson by writing and drawing about a special friend giving emphasis on how they share a special friendship with each other.
February is also National I Love to Read Month and our school has prepared several fun activities for students to participate in throughout the month. I would like to challenge all of you to make this month an engaging and fun moment and take the opportunity to spend some time with your kids develop the love for reading whether it'd be a trip to the Public Library or a nightly story telling with the family members. Happy Reading!!
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Talaroc
