October in Grade 1

Grade One has been very focused on practising our phonics and reading skills this month. Our Home Reading program is in full swing now as students have been bringing levelled books home to read daily to a parent each night to improve fluency. Please keep up with this everyday, parents! Additionally, we've worked on 4 Spelling units with a spelling test each Friday and we're working on complete sentence structures. We've changed our daily calendar activity to an independent calendar for each student with an AB pattern for the 1 to 31 days of October as well as creating a graph of the weather . We continue to reinforce counting as a class to 100 by one, twos, fives and tens using our 100 chart. We're also doing picture math for addition and subtraction making sure we watch for either an addition or subtraction sign when doing our calculating .

In Social Studies , we continue to explore the concept of  “self” and ideas of how we fit into our family and the community . In Science class, we continue to be engaged with activities  involving our five senses .  Art has been so much fun this month as we have created Silly Pumpkins with teeth and tongues and pumpkins and black cats out of paper strips. French class continues to draw upon our ability to introduce our self and state our name  as well as to say “ His /her name is”.

In Religion class we reflected on our many blessings during Thanksgiving and gave thanks to God for all He has gifted us : Family, friends, food, shelter and love. We've prayed to the Virgin Mary during October the month which is dedicated to her as we learned how to pray a decade of the Rosary saying 10 Hail Marys .  We've studied The Ten Commandments and their importance to us in our daily lives as Catholics.
