January in Grade One
Happy New Year to all families
of Grade One students !
It's been a very busy month
for our students since we've returned to school this chilly, January after
Christmas break.
Our English Language Arts
program is continuing to expand and grow as students' reading is improving
regularly with the help of parents' input by enforcing regular home reading and
practising of sight words. Thank you families for your continued support of
your child's literacy growth in these ways!
Additionally, we have started to implement both Literacy Centres as well
as Numeracy Centres on alternating mornings with exciting, interactive groups
that reinforce both literacy and numeracy skills! We're having so much fun in
these literacy and numeracy groups, we don't even realize how much we're
actually learning at the same time!
In Social Studies, we're
finishing our unit on “All About Me” with our “About Me” bags that students
filled and took turns presenting in front of their peers. We all learned more
about each other through the sharing and presentation of our “About Me” bags!
We're also finishing our
Science unit on our Five Senses with some blindfold activities to see if we can
identify our peers based on their voices only as well as identifying different
foods based on their smells! These blindfold activities have been so much fun!
In our Art classes, the
students have enjoyed experimenting with oil pastels and cotton swabs to create
snowmen and explosive fireworks with pastels and glitter to celebrate the New
Year, 2026! Additionally, the class
created winter self portraits bundled in scarves and tuques! Their creativity
in their artwork is quite beautiful and breathtaking!
In spite of all the indoor
recesses due to our bitterly cold weather, the students are to be commended for
how well they have been playing together and sharing the toys, puzzles and
games during indoor recess! I'm so proud of them for their growth, both
academically and socially!
