February in Grade One
With “I Love to Read” being the theme for February, literacy
tends to have a stronger focus during this month . One of the many highlights
of February included a visit from a guest police officer from the City of
Winnipeg Police who came as a guest reader. He read a story to the students in
the library and then answered questions from the students including, of course,
his favourite doughnut! The students were excited to speak with a “real” police
officer ! Students also took part daily in DEAR time-Drop Everything And Read
when they heard the sound of the hooves on the intercom . They had to remember to bring books with them
to Phys. Ed.class and to Music in case they heard the hooves.
In our daily morning
messages we had a strong grammar focus as we learned more about
nouns, specifically proper nouns and common nouns and how to identify them in a
sentence.
The students continued to display their artistic talents in
Art class especially around Valentine's Day as they created valentines for
their families and loved ones . Additionally we met with our grade 7 reading
buddies to create hand-print bumblebee art for Valentine's Day !
Also, just after Valentine's Day,in mid month, as we entered
into Lent, we began conversations in religion class about our expectations as
Catholics during the celebration of Lent. We colour a segment of our 40 pieces
on a stained glass cross each day during
Lent to remind us of the 40 days of Lent and our obligations as Catholics
during Lent .
On the 100th day of school, we celebrated by each
of us making a patterned Fruit Loop necklace with 100 Fruit Loops in total!
Additionally, we played Race to 100, a dice game where you have to score 100
points in order to be the winner ! We played in our groups of three for prizes! On the 101st day of school we watched 101 Dalmations while enjoying individual bags of popcorn brought in by one of our classmates !
February was a bitterly cold month with many indoor recesses.
During these indoor recesses, it has been rewarding to witness the kindness,
sharing and taking turns among the children as they played together with our
variety of educational toys and manipulatives in the classroom. As important as it is for the children to get
outdoors , get fresh air and run around, they really made the best of the
situation and showed very positive attitudes and behaviors !
A reminder to keep the
love of reading alive everyday by reading with your child daily and continuing
to practice your child's sight words
with them regularly. Thank you for working together as a team on your child's
educational journey.
Blessings,
Miss Urbanski
